「ヘブライ」は古フランス語の「Ebreu」に由来し、ラテン語の「Hebraeus」から、ギリシャ語の「Hebraios」に由来し、ヘブライ語の「ʿIḇrî」から来ており、「エベルの子孫」を意味します。
「Hebraios」はラテン語の「Hebraeus」に変わり、古フランス語を経て現代英語の「Hebrew」になりました。
最初は「エベルの子孫」を意味していましたが、時を経て「古代の人々の一員または彼らが話した言語」という現在の意味に進化しました。
