語源
「annulment」はラテン語の「annullare」から来ており、『ad-』は『〜へ／強意』、『nullus』は『無・何もない』を意味した。
「annulment」は中世ラテン語の「annullare」から変化し、古フランス語や中英語（'annullen'／'annul'など）を経て、現代英語の動詞 'annul' と名詞 'annulment' に至った。
当初は「無にする／無効にする」を意味しており、時を経て現在の「（法的に）無効と宣言する」という意味に発展した。
