語源
『contend』はラテン語の『contendere』に由来し、接頭辞の『con-』は「一緒に」を、語根の『tendere』は「伸ばす／努める」を意味した。
『contendere』は古フランス語や中英語の語形を経て、中英語の『contenden』のような形になり、最終的に現代英語の『contend』になった。
当初は「一緒に伸ばす／努める（努力する）」という意味で、やがて「争う／努力する」や「主張する」といった現在の主要な意味に発展した。
