語源
『emissary』はラテン語の『emissarius』に由来。『emittere』（e-＋mittere＝「外へ送る」）と接尾辞『-arius』（「〜に関する」）から成る。
『emissary』はラテン語（Late Latin）『emissarius』→古フランス語『emissaire』→中英語『emissarie』を経て現代英語の『emissary』になった。
当初は「派遣された人（使者）」を指したが、次第に「外交使節」や「公式代表」を特に指す語として発展し、同時に一般的な「任務で派遣される代理人」の意味も残っている。
