「fifty」は古英語の『fiftiġ』に由来し、『fif』（5）と接尾辞『-tig』（10のかたまり）から成る。
Proto-Germanicの'*fimftigaz'から古英語の'fiftiġ'、中英語を経て現代英語の'fifty'（複数形は'fifties'）になった。
当初は「5つの10（5×10）」を意味していたが、次第に数の「50」や「1950年代（the fifties）」、「50代（in one's fifties）」などの派生的な意味へと広がった。
