語源
「hoodwink」は英語から来ており、'hood'（頭を覆うもの）と 'wink'（まぶたを閉じる）の組み合わせに由来する。
古英語の 'hōd'（hood）と 'wincian'（wink）が近代英語で結びつき、元は「目隠しをする」を意味した。その後比喩的に「だます」という意味が発達した。
当初は「目を覆って目隠しする」を意味していたが、時間とともに「（誤導して）だます」という現在の主要な意味に変化した。
