語源
「reprimand」はラテン語の「reprimere」に由来し、『re-』は「戻す」、『primere』（『premere』起源）は「押す」を意味した。
中世ラテン語やアンゴ＝フランス語（例：中世ラテン語の「reprimandare」、古フランス語の「reprimander」）を経て、中英語で現代英語の「reprimand」になった。
当初は「押し戻す、抑える」を意味していたが、時とともに「（公式に）叱責する」という現在の意味に変化した。
