語源
「seizure」は古フランス語の「seisir」（後のフランス語「saisir」に相当）に由来し、語根は「取る、つかむ」を意味していた。
中英語期に古フランス語の「seisir」から発展し（中英語では「seisure」などの形が見られる）、動詞「seize」との類推で現代英語の「seizure」になった。
当初は「取る・つかむ行為」を意味していたが、時代とともに「公権力による押収」や「突然の発作（医学的）」などの意味に広がった。
