語源
『whitewash』は現代英語で『white（白）』＋『wash（洗う・塗る）』の複合語。'white'は古英語の'hwīt'で「明るい色」、'wash'は古英語の'wǣscan'で「洗う・液体を塗る」を意味した。
『whitewash』は中英語で白い石灰の塗布を意味する複合語として現れた。文字どおりの『白い塗り』の意味を保ち、後に『隠す・取り繕う』という比喩的な意味が発展した。
最初は「白い塗り（白いコーティング）」を意味していたが、現代では「欠点を隠す・取り繕う」という比喩的な意味も一般的になった。
