語源
「also-ran」は米語で成立し、20世紀初頭に『also（そのほかに）』＋『ran（runの過去形）』をそのまま組み合わせて作られた語です。
もともとは競馬などの実況で『also ran』（レースに出走したが入賞しなかった馬）を指した言い回しから発展し、現在のように失敗した競争者全般を示す複合語になりました。
当初は『レースに出たが勝てなかった者』という文字通りの意味でしたが、次第に『敗者・重要でない者』という広い意味で使われるようになりました。
