語源
『aperiodic』はギリシャ語の接頭辞『a-』とギリシャ語『periodikos』（ラテン語・フランス語を経由）に由来し、『a-』は「〜でない」を、『periodos』は「巡回・周期」を意味した。
『aperiodic』は英語で接頭辞『a-』と『periodic』（ラテン語/フランス語を経たギリシャ語『periodikos』）を合成して作られ、『周期性がない』という意味になった。
元来は単に「周期的でない／周期性がない」を意味したが、その後数学・物理・工学などの専門分野で、繰り返しのパターンを持たない信号・関数・運動を示す技術用語として拡張された。
