語源
『arrest』は古フランス語の『arester（または arrestar）』に由来し、俗ラテン語 *arrestare（ラテン語の接頭辞 ad- と 'restare' に由来）を経てきた。
『arrest』は古フランス語の 'arester'、中英語の 'arresten' を経て現代英語の『arrest』になった。
当初は「止める・留める」という意味だったが、時代を経て『拘束して連行する（逮捕する）』という法的な意味が主要な用法となった。
