『behemoth』は聖書ヘブライ語の語『bəhēmôṯ』（ヘブライ文字：בהמות）に由来し、語根の『behemah』は「獣」や「家畜」を意味した。
『bəhēmôṯ』はギリシャ語（七十人訳）やラテン語（ウルガータ）を経て中英語に入り、現代英語の『behemoth』になった。
