語源
「carpel」は新ラテン語の「carpellum」に由来し、語幹の「carp-」はギリシャ語の「karpós（実・果実）」を意味する。
「carpellum」はギリシャ語の「karpós（果実）」から新ラテン語で作られ、19世紀に植物学用語として英語の「carpel」に導入された。
当初は「小さな果実」を意味する語形だったが、次第に植物学で「胚珠を含む（雌性の）単位」を指すようになった。
