語源
「pistil」はフランス語の単語「pistil」に由来し、ラテン語の「pistillum」は「乳棒（乳棒・すりこぎ／ペストル）」を意味した。
「pistil」はラテン語の「pistillum」（「乳棒」）から中世・近代フランス語の「pistil」を経て英語に入った。花の部位が乳棒に似ていることから植物学用語として定着した。
当初は「乳棒（すりこぎ）」を指したが、その形に似ていることから徐々に「花の雌しべ」を意味するようになった。
