語源
「carpel」は新ラテン語の単語「carpellum」に由来し、'carp-'は（ギリシャ語の）「karpos」（果実）を意味した。
「carpellum」はギリシャ語の「karpos」（果実）からラテン語・新ラテン語の植物学用語を経て、19世紀初頭に英語の植物学用語「carpel」として採用された。
当初は小さな果実や果実に関連する構造を指したが、次第に花の雌性生殖単位を特定して指す意味に変化した。
