語源
「devious」はラテン語に由来し、具体的には接頭辞「de-」と「via」からなるラテン語の語『devius』に由来する。ここで「de-」は「外へ／離れて」を、「via」は「道」を意味した。
『devius』（「道から外れた」の意）はラテン語からラテンダーや中世の用法を経て近代英語の「devious」になり、さらに接尾辞「-ness」を付けて英語で名詞「deviousness」が作られた。
当初は『道から外れている（物理的な意味）』を指したが、次第に『遠回しである、率直でない、（場合により）不正直である』という現在の意味に変化した。
