「enquiry」はラテン語の「inquirere」に由来し、'in-'は「〜の中へ・〜へ向かって」、'quaerere'は「探す・尋ねる」を意味した。
「inquirere」は古フランス語（enquerre）や中英語の 'enqueren' を経て、最終的に現代英語の 'enquire'／'enquiry' になった。
当初は「探す・捜索する」を意味していたが、次第に「情報を尋ねる」「正式な調査を行う」という現在の意味になった。
