語源
「probe」はラテン語の 'probare' に由来し、'probare' は「試す・立証する」を意味した。
「probe」は古フランス語／中フランス語の（'prober' や 'prover' のような）形を経て中英語の 'proben' に入り、最終的に現代英語の 'probe' になった。
当初は「試す・立証する」を意味したが、次第に「調べる・探る」という意味に広がり、医療用具や探査機などの名称にも用いられるようになった。
