語源
「entree」はフランス語の単語「entrée」に由来し、動詞「entrer」は「入る」を意味した。
中期フランス語の「entrée」から英語に取り入れられ、『入ること』に関する意味を持ち、のちに食事における最初の料理（入口としての料理）という意味に特化した。
当初は「入ること」や「入場」を意味していたが、次第に食事の最初に出る料理を指す語になり、さらに米国では主菜を意味するように変化した。
