語源
「fission」はラテン語の「fissio」に由来し、語根の「findere」は「分ける・裂く」を意味した。
「fissio」（ラテン語）から科学用語としてのニューラテン語を経て英語の「fission」となり、特に19～20世紀に生物学・核物理学の分野で用法が確立した。
当初は「分裂・裂けること」を指していたが、時間とともに生物学的・核物理学的な専門的意味（および集団の分裂を表す比喩的用法）に発展した。
