語源
「interval」はラテン語の「intervallum」に由来し、「inter-」は「間」を、「vallum」は「土塁・壁（＝仕切り）」を意味しました（そこから『すき間・間隔』の意が生じました）。
中世ラテン語の「intervallum」および古フランス語の「intervalle」を経て中英語の「interval」となり、現代英語の「interval」になりました。
当初は「土塁や壁の間のすき間」を指しましたが、徐々に時間・空間・音程・数学的区間など、より広い『2点の間のすき間・間隔』を意味するようになりました。
