語源
「letting」は最終的に古英語の動詞「lǣtan（lætan）」に由来し、「許す・残す・させる」といった意味があった。
古英語の「lǣtan」は中英語の「leten／let」を経て名詞形「letting」（許すこと・貸すこと）になり、近代英語では「賃貸する」の意味が確立して不動産関連の名詞として使われるようになった。
当初は「許す・そのままにしておく」という意味だったが、次第に「（対価を得て）貸す・賃貸する」という限定的な意味に発展した。
