語源
「osmotic」はニューラテン語の「osmoticus」から来ており、さらにギリシャ語の「osmōtikos」に由来する。ギリシャ語の「osmē（または osme）」は「押すこと、衝動、（におい）」という意味（押しや駆動力の感覚）を持っていた。
「osmotic」はギリシャ語の「osmōtikos」からラテン語形「osmoticus」を経て、19世紀半ばに生理学・化学の用語として英語に入った。
当初は「押すこと」や「衝動」に関する語だったが、次第に「半透膜を通した溶媒の移動（浸透）」という科学的意味で用いられるようになり、現在はその過程に関する形容詞となった。
