語源
「recitation」はラテン語の『recitatio』に由来し、『recitare』は「再び声に出して読む・呼び出す」を意味した（接頭辞're-'は「再び」、語根'citare'は「呼ぶ・動かす」を意味する）。
『recitatio』（中世ラテン語）から中英語の借用語を経て、現代英語の『recitation』になった。
当初は「声に出して読むこと・呼び出すこと」を意味したが、次第に「朗読・暗唱・口頭発表（および授業の演習）」などの意味に広がった。
