語源
「stunt」は中英語の『stunten』に由来し、その語幹は「短くする・抑える」という意味を示していた。
『stunten』は中英語で停止・抑制に関する意味で用いられ、その後近代英語で「成長を抑える」の意や、19–20世紀にかけて「目を引く見世物・トリック」の意味へ発展した。
当初は「短くする・成長を妨げる」を意味していたが、次第に「注目を集める派手な行為・トリック」の意味も持つようになり、生物学的な「発育阻害」の意味も残った。
