語源
「atomicity」は英語に由来し、接尾辞「-ity」を「atomic」に付けて作られた語。「atomic」はギリシャ語の「atomos」（切れない＝a-「ない」＋tomos「切る」）に由来する。
ギリシャ語の「atomos」が中世ラテン語／新ラテン語の「atomus／atom-」を経て英語の「atom」や形容詞「atomic」になり、近代英語で「atomic」＋「-ity」によって現代英語の「atomicity」が作られた。
もともとは『切れない・不可分』という意味だったが、時代とともに化学における「分子中の原子数」や情報科学における「トランザクションの不可分性」などの専門的な意味に発展した。
