語源
「consonant」はラテン語の「consonans」から来ており、「con-」は「一緒に」を、「sonare」は「鳴る」を意味しました。
ラテン語の「consonans」（動詞「consonare」の現在分詞）は古フランス語や中英語を経て現代英語の「consonant」になりました。
当初は「一緒に鳴る」を意味しましたが、次第に（1）母音でない音（息の流れが狭められる・止められる音）や（2）比喩的に「一致している・調和している」を意味するようになりました。
