'endorsement'は中世ラテン語/古フランス語に由来し、具体的には'indorsare'/'endosser'に由来する。ここで'en-/in-'は「〜の上に・中に」、ラテン語の'dorsum'は「背中」を意味した。
'endorsement'は中世ラテン語の'indorsare'（書類の裏に書くこと）から古フランス語の'endosser'となり、英語に入って動詞'endorse'、さらに名詞'endorsement'が形成された。
