語源
「filling」は古英語の動詞「fyllan」（満たす）に由来し、名詞や動名詞を作る接尾辞「-ing」が付いてできた語です。
古英語の「fylling」から中英語の「filing」などを経て、名詞化の「-ing」の規則に従い現代英語の「filling」になりました。
当初は「満たす行為」や「満たされている状態」を意味しましたが、次第に「それを満たす材料」例えば歯の詰め物や食べ物の具を意味するようになりました。
