語源
「keeping」（'keepings' の語幹）は古英語の 'cēpan'（'cépan'）に由来し、「保持する・守る・守ること」の意味があった。
'cēpan' は中英語の 'kepen' を経て現代英語の 'keep' になり、動詞から接尾辞 '-ing' を加えて名詞 'keeping' が作られ、複数形が 'keepings' になった。
元々は「保持する・捕える」などの行為を指していたが、次第に「保持する・養う・維持する」の意味へ広がり、名詞としては「所持品・維持のための支給・管理下のもの」などを意味するようになった。
