語源
「old-timer」は英語に由来し、『old』＋『time』に人を表す接尾辞『-er』がついて、以前の時代に関連する人や長くそこにいる人を意味する合成語としてできた。
『old-timer』は『old time（昔の時代）』の表現と『time』＋『-er』の人を表す語形成から発展し、19世紀に口語として使われ始め、やがて経験ある人や古参を指す語として定着した。
当初は『昔の時代の人』を指したが、次第に『ある場所・役割に長くいる人』や『年配の人』という現在の意味に変化した。
