語源
「thrill」は古英語（または初期中英語）の 'thrylian'／'thrillen' のような語に由来し、『突き刺す』『貫く』という意味があった。
『thrill』は『突き刺す』を意味する古ゲルマン系の形から中英語の 'thrillen' へと変化し、やがて震え・かすかな振動の意味を持つようになり、18世紀ごろから『突然の興奮』という感情的な意味へと発展して現代英語の 'thrill' になった。
最初は『突き刺す／貫く』という物理的な意味だったが、次第に『震える』という感覚を伴う意味に広がり、最終的に『突然の興奮を引き起こす』という現在の意味になった。
