語源
『content』はラテン語の過去分詞『contentus』（動詞 'continēre' に由来）に起源があり、『con-』（com-/con-）は「一緒に」を、『tenēre』（または 'tenir'）は「保つ・持つ」を意味した。
ラテン語『contentus』から古フランス語『content』を経て中英語『content』となり、最終的に現代英語の『content』（名詞の複数形は『contents』）になった。
当初は「中に入っている・保持されている」という意味で、のちに「満足している」という意味にも広がり、名詞としては「入っているもの（中身）」を意味するようになった。
