語源
「denature」はフランス語の「dénaturer」に由来し，最終的にはラテン語の要素「de-」（〜から離れる）と「natura」（自然）から成る。
「denature」は18〜19世紀のフランス語「dénaturer」から変化して英語に入り，「nature（本性・性質）」を変えるという意味で用いられるようになった。
当初は『本来の性質を取り除く・変える』という一般的な意味だったが，やがて『タンパク質を変性させる』などの科学的意味や『アルコールを飲めなくする』という法的・産業的意味も持つようになった。
