語源
「excitability」はラテン語に由来し、動詞「excitare」から来ている。接頭辞「ex-」は「外へ／前へ」を意味し、「citare」（ciereの頻用形）は「動かす／刺激する」を意味した。
「excitare」から派生してLate Latinの「excitabilis」やMedieval Latinの「excitabilitas」となり、学術的・科学的な用法を通じて現代英語の名詞「excitability」になった。
当初は「呼び起こされる能力」を意味したが、時間とともに組織の生理学的な反応性や心理的・感情的な興奮しやすさという意味へ広がった。
