語源
「hypotonic」はギリシャ語の結合形「hypo-」と「tonic」（ギリシャ語の「tonos」）に由来する。ここで「hypo-」は「下・以下」、「tonos」は「張ること、緊張」を意味する。
「hypo-」と「tonic」はニューラテン語・医学用語として結合され「hypotonic」となり、19世紀に科学・医学分野で英語に入った。
当初は「張力が低い」の一般的意味で用いられたが、次第に生理学・医学で「浸透圧が低い」や「筋緊張が低い」という専門的な意味に特化した。
