語源
「isotonic」はギリシャ語を経てニューラテン語からきており、ギリシャ語の『isotonikos』(ἰσοτονικός) に由来する。'isos' は「等しい」、'tonos' は「張り（張力）」を意味した。
ギリシャ語『isotonikos』はニューラテン語『isotonicus』を経て、19世紀に生理学・化学用語として現代英語の『isotonic』になった。
元来は「等しい張力を持つ」という意味だったが、次第に「浸透圧が等しい」という意味や、等張性の筋収縮・等張飲料を表す語として使われるようになった。
