語源
'hypotonicity'は接頭辞'hypo-'（ギリシャ語の「下・以下」）と形容詞'tonic'（ギリシャ語'tonos'「張力・緊張」由来）、および名詞化接尾辞'-ity'（ラテン語/古フランス語由来）を組み合わせて現代英語で作られた語です。
'hypotonicity'はまず形容詞'hypotonic'（近代ラテン語・19世紀の科学語形成に由来）として用いられ、それに名詞化接尾辞'-ity'が付いて現代英語の名詞'hypotonicity'になりました。
当初は「下の・低い張力」という一般的な意味でしたが、次第に生理学・医学で「浸透圧が低い状態」や「筋緊張の低下」を指す専門用語として定着しました。
