語源
'isotonicity' は近代ラテン語的な造語で、ギリシャ語の要素「iso-（等しい）」と「tonos（張り・緊張）」から成る。
『isotonic』は19せいきに生理学・化学で作られ、その後接尾辞『-ity』（ラテン語の『-itas』を経由）をつけて『isotonicity（等張性・等張性質）』が形成された。
当初は等しい張力・筋の張りに関する意味が強かったが、やがて溶液間の浸透圧が等しいという意味（等張性）で使われることが一般的になった。
