語源
「tonicity」は近代英語に由来し，形容詞「tonic」と接尾辞「-ity」から形成された。「tonic」は最終的にギリシャ語の「tonikos」「tonos」に由来し，本来は「張り」「音（tone）」を意味した。
「tonic」はラテン語「tonus」や古フランス語・中世フランス語の「tonique」を経て英語に入った。その後英語で名詞化接尾辞「-ity」が付加され，技術的用法の「tonicity」が生まれた。
当初は「音」や「張り」を指していたが，そこから派生して現在は（浸透圧に関する性質や音楽的主音性，韻律上の強勢配置など）専門的な意味で使われるようになった。
