語源
「localism」は英語に由来し、形容詞『local』＋接尾辞『-ism』で構成される。『local』は最終的にラテン語の『locus（場所）』に由来し、『-ism』は慣習や思想を示す。
『local』はラテン語の『locus』から後期ラテン語・古フランス語を経て中英語に入り、19世紀頃に『local』と『-ism』を結合して現代英語の『localism』が作られた。
当初は『局所的であること・その性質』を示したが、次第に『地域の自治や地域性を重視する主義・傾向』を指すようになった。
