語源
「regionalism」はラテン語の「regio」（地域）と、最終的にギリシャ語の「-ismos（行為・思想）」に由来する接尾辞「-ism」から成る。
ラテン語の「regio」が古英語・フランス語を経て英語の'region'や形容詞'regional'になり、19世紀に形容詞に接尾辞「-ism」が付いて『regionalism』が現れ、政治的・言語的・文化的な意味を持つようになった。
元来は『ある地域に関する』という意味だったが、やがて『地域主義（政治的立場）』や『地域性を強調する言語・文化的特徴』の意味へと広がった。
