語源
「polarise」はフランス語の『polariser』に由来し、さらにニューラテン語の『polaris』（『極に関する』）にさかのぼる。
『polarise』は19世紀半ばにフランス語の『polariser』から英語に入った。『polariser』はラテン語の『polus』（極）に由来するニューラテン語『polaris』から派生した。
元々は「極を与える・極に関する」という意味だったが、物理学的な「偏光させる」や比喩的な「二極化させる」という意味に発展した。
